Perimenopause, the phase before menopause, is when the ovaries begin to produce less estrogen and no longer release eggs. Perimenopause typically occurs in women when they reach their 40s, and ends when a woman has gone a full year without having her period.
Symptoms of perimenopause include:
- Hot flashes
- Breast tenderness
- Low sex drive
- Irregular periods
- Discomfort during sex
- Frequent urination
- Mood swings
- Trouble sleeping
Women typically obtain relief from these symptoms from low-dose birth control pills, a birth control patch, vaginal ring and progesterone injections. It’s also important to improve one’s overall health, including: frequent exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, drinking less alcohol and getting more sleep.
What Is Menopause?
Menopause marks the end of a woman’s reproductive phase, when the ovaries no longer release an egg every month and menstruation stops. Ovaries produce the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which control a woman’s period (menstruation) and the release of eggs (ovulation).
Most women nearing menopause will experience symptoms similar to perimenopause, including hot flashes, vaginal dryness, sore breasts, frequent urination and difficulty sleeping, Women may also experience fatigue, depression, weight gain and frequent headaches.
BHRT for Menopause – A Natural Treatment Option
Menopause is natural and most symptoms will go away over time. If the symptoms persist and cause additional problems, there are treatments that can assist. Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is a treatment method that restores testosterone and estrogen to its proper levels. After BHRT treatment, patients report feeling younger and having more energy.
Bioidentical hormones come from natural plant sources, which are exact replicas to hormones produced naturally in the human body. In the beginning of your BHRT treatment, you may experience side effects as your body adjusts to the hormones.
It’s important to discuss the pros and cons with your doctor before using any hormone replacement therapy. Some may experience side effects that include acne, bloating, weight gain, fatigue and mood swings.
