A Brief History of Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month was first celebrated in 1949. Clifford Whittingham Beers, who later founded National Mental Health Association, was one of five children in his family who all suffered from mental illness and psychological distress. He and his five siblings spent time at mental institutions, where Mr. Beers found out that the mental health field had a notorious reputation for malpractice, maltreatment, and immense bias.

He wrote the book “A Mind That Found Itself”, which gained popularity and support from medical professionals. Beers founded the National Committee for Mental Hygiene, to find ways to make sure that mental health patients received the right care, and that they did not feel alone in their fight against mental diseases.

What Does Mental Health Look Like Today?

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience mental illness, which has been among the most common health conditions in the country. After two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, this number has doubled. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression and anxiety increased globally by 25%.

All this data makes it visible that mental health conditions are on the rise. Along with it comes the search for alternatives in mental health treatment options for providers. Compounded medications are highly sought after by healthcare providers to meet the needs of patients suffering from severe anxiety and depression. One of the alternatives that are used for mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression is ketamine.

Ketamine in Treating Anxiety and Depression

Valor Compounding Pharmacy compounds ketamine in three forms, and a variety of strengths. The ketamine forms that Valor compounds are sublingual tablets, troches, and nasal sprays. Our pharmacists work closely with national telehealth practices, specialty ketamine clinics, psychiatrists, and mental health clinics to understand and assist with the course of our patient’s therapy.
