Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a men’s health issue usually observed among 50+ men but this doesn’t mean that younger men do not also experience this condition. Over 18 million adult men in the United States have erectile dysfunction and at least 1 in 2 men over 50 experience some symptoms associated with ED.

Many over-the-counter medications are available to address erectile dysfunction (ED). However, these medications may not give the expected results for patients. In this case, your urologist or PCP may prescribe you bimix, trimix, and quadmix injectables as an alternative option. We asked our team of experienced pharmacists to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about bimix, trimix, and quadmix penile injectables, and here are their answers…

What are bimix, trimix, and quadmix?

Bimix (two), trimix (three), and quadmix (four) stand for the number of ingredients that may go into a compounded ED medication. We currently compound the following four ingredients in our sterile laboratory:

  • Alprostadil
  • Papaverine HCI
  • Phentolamine Mesylate
  • Atropine

How do bimix, trimix, and quadmix injectables work?

Simply, these compounded ED injectables work by dilating the blood vessels inside the penis to help achieve an erection.

Most compounds have between 5-20 minutes of onset time and can last somewhere between 30 minutes to an hour after the injection. Talk to your doctor to get more information about what to expect from your ED prescription considering your personal needs.

What does a bimix, trimix, or quadmix injectable kit look like?

Your prescription comes with a syringe, alcohol swabs, and a short needle that is similar to those used by diabetic patients to inject insulin.

What do shipping and storage for injectable ED meds look like?

Your prescription is shipped with the injection kit, allowing you to use it in up to 10 doses. It is delivered in a refrigerated or frozen package depending on the medication you were prescribed, to ensure quality. It may need to be kept in a refrigerator or a freezer until the medication finishes or is discarded.

What ED formulations do you make?

We make 6 ED compounds which are dispensed in a quantity of 5mL.

How to Use Erectile Dysfunction Injections

We have prepared step-by-step instructions for you to confidently use your prescription at home without needing assistance. You can reach us here with any questions you may have about your prescription.

  1. Tear open an alcohol swab and wipe the rubber top of the bottle to sterilize it.
  2. Peel open the syringe and remove the protective cover from the needle. It is important that you do NOT contaminate the needle with anything but the rubber bottle cap.
  3. Make sure you inject a small amount of air from the syringe into the vial before pulling the appropriate amount of medication.
  4. Push the needle through the rubber stopper, then flip the ampule (the glass container of medication) upside down. Pull on the plunger until you withdraw the prescribed amount of medicine.
  5. As you continue to hold the ampule upside down, inject whatever air remains in the syringe into the ampule.
  6. Pull the needle out of the ampule and lay the syringe on the edge of a flat surface. Make sure the needle hangs over the edge to keep it from touching anything.
  7. Grasp the head of the penis between the index finger and thumb and gently pull the penis away from your body until the skin is taut.
  8. When choosing an injection site, avoid any area where a vein is clearly visible. We recommend changing injection sites from left to right as well as up and down the shaft and back again to ensure that you do not develop scar tissue at one specific site.
  9. Wipe the skin with an alcohol swab.
  10. Pick up the syringe with the other hand and position your hand like you’re about to throw a dart.
  11. Touch the point of the needle to the place you want to inject. (Only inject your penis while you’re sitting or standing.)
  12. Hold the syringe at a 90-degree angle and push lightly to penetrate the skin near the base of your penis.
  13. Once you’ve poked through the skin, you will feel some resistance. Push firmly forward until a distinct “give” is felt. The needle should now be in the right place (within erectile bodies). The whole length of the needle should also be up to the hub.
  14. Hold the syringe between your index and middle fingers and place a thumb on the plunger to inject the entire contents of the syringe. Then take the needle out of your penis.
  15. Immediately apply pressure to your penis with your thumb and index finger for two to three minutes using the alcohol swab. Wait until there is no bleeding.
  16. Place the needle in an appropriate sharps disposal container.
